Mark<br>Actually it's a Ford 1300 with a model 770 loader. I just bought a 1500 4wd with the 770 loader for 6500 and am very happy. Is this 1300 4wd? I know I would not be able to do the work I am doing with the loader if the 1500 were only 2wd...but then I am asking it to do quite a bit :-) What kind of work do you plan on doing with this tractor?<br>Kim

ROPS is next on my list...I have started looking. For such a basic (and simple) piece of anti-liability you would think that the manufacturers would be making them very available at basically cost. Heh<br>In any case I am considering making one...all that I have read cautions people not make them...but they seem quite basic. Is there something I am missing?<br>Especially on a tractor like the small fords it would seem like a homebuilder would be more likely to overbuild it than underbuild it.<br>I have looked at Oaktree's rops that he made and it looks very nice.<br>Thanks for the concern<br>Kim

I am also new to tractors. We have a 30 acre hilly woodlot that had major ice storm damage and needs a major thinning...but the lumber is not marketable enough for a logger to come in. So I ended up figuring out that it would be cheaper to buy a tractor and do it myself. Besides I really like to tinker.<br>Without knowing much I ended up getting a Ford 1500 4wd with loader, I paid 6500 which I now think was a bit high...but I did get it from a dealer so there was at least a modicum of warranty protection along with it. So far I love it, I have fixed our road which was in terrible shape with a blade I modified from an old steel wheeled grader that was falling apart on the property, I cut a road through a small hogsback and down a slope with the loader that would have cost me at least the price of the tractor to have contracted out. And I have cut a dragged a ton of trees, including the ones I made the bridge out of. In general I have been having loads of fun doing work on a piece of land I used to find intimidating...(actually it was the honey-do list that I found intimidating) and just four short weeks ago I didnt know a 2n from a Kubota. This tractor is rated at 17hp at the PTO, which I understand is the old way of describing a 25hp tractor. So far it has done everything I have asked of it including dragging an 80' poplar (14

Being new to tractors and so far only wrestled with one implement...but from horsing around alignment holes in stage trusses and things I know that a drift pin can be very handy...a nice 3/8 piece of hardened steel. Depending on the implement it might be worthwhile to drill (if there is a place for it) a hole directly above the pin. Then as you back your tractor in close put the drift pin through the drawbar and then through the implement and yank on it until they line up...then you just need to drop your drawbar to the level of the pin.<br>If the implement is a bracket attachment using hitch pins it's even easier...just put the drift pin through one of the implement holes and through the drawbar and yank it around until you can get the pin through the other side.<br>Good Luck<br>Kim

The winch I plan to make will use an old drum from a junk winch with a 2' circumfrence...the commercial 3pt logging winches seem to have a line speed of between 2 to 5 ft/sec. I've found some series 60 roller chain with a 44 tooth gear. I am hoping to gear down to at least 4/1 but ideally more like 9/1. To some extent I can control the speed with the rpms on the pto. I like the engine idling at about 1200 rpm anyway which will put the pto around 270 rpm...getting me into the right range on line speed. I plan on copying the commercial winches with a blade/barbed grapple that will brace the tractor against the pull and then hold the end of the log up for skidding. I plan on driving the drum through an old magnetic clutch I found for a front pto (I hope it will handle the torque)...If it works this will be nicer than the lanyard operated manual clutches I have seen, and it will still work as a

Can we start a discussion on what to do with aspen/popple/poplar since this whole project started for me because since I coulndt get any loggers to do the job for the logs I figured that for the money I would spend I could get most of the equipment myself :-)
I am open to any suggestions anyone can give...I have learned more in the last 4 weeks about tractors and logging and falling trees than I ever had the slightest idea ever existed!

Also...I am assuming that with ROPS you ought to wear the seatbelt because in that case you want to stay within the protection zone...I am also assuming that without ROPS a seatbelt would actually be more dangerous.
